Hillary Clinton supports Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig amidst Oscars nomination controversy

Margot Robbie Greta Gerwig

Oscar nominations for 2024 were revealed on Tuesday, January 2023, sparking criticism towards the Academy for overlooking Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie in the Best Director and Best Actress categories. Fans expressed their discontent, labeling the decisions as indicative of a prevailing patriarchy. Ryan Gosling secured a nomination for Best Supporting Actor, further intensifying the controversy.

Former United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton joined the chorus of support for Gerwig and Robbie. Taking to her X (formerly Twitter) account, she wrote, “Greta & Margot, though it may sting to conquer the box office without claiming gold, your millions of fans cherish you. You’re both far more than Kenough. #HillaryBarbie.”

Ryan Gosling also voiced his disappointment, emphasizing the pivotal roles Gerwig and Robbie played in the success of the film. Barbie, with a global box office revenue of approximately $1.44 billion, emerged as the highest-grossing film of 2023. In addition to Gosling’s nomination, the Greta Gerwig-directed fantasy comedy secured seven other Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design, and two nods in the Best Original Song category.

The 96th Academy Awards, scheduled for Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA, will be hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel for the fourth time. In India, the ceremony will be telecast and streamed early on Monday, March 11.
